Move Me On Proficiency Scale Example
Assessing Clay Portraits Task
This formative assessment tool, Move Me On Proficiency Evaluation, will sit within any unit of work and has been based upon the principles of SOLO Taxonomy. The positives within using this model is that ‘SOLO Taxonomy provides a simple and robust way of describing how learning outcomes grow in complexity form surface to deep to conceptual understanding’ (Briggs & Collis, 1982; Hook & Mills, 2011, p. 9). When this is applied to student learning within Visual Communication Design or Visual Arts, the overall focus within the assessment highlights the application and development of skills rather than the outcome. Therefore, this becomes a formative learning tool to support independent learners to be metacognitive and perceptive learners focusing on moving themselves on.
The process for utilization of this tool includes students’ discussing with the teacher how they believe their development of relevant skills are progressing throughout the unit. This allows the student to check in as the learning unfolds and access advice from the teacher and coaching in how they are able to further develop their skills and how this will inform their summative assessment result.
